Put your products up and the money will roll in! Too bad the reality isn’t that easy. If you’re lucky, you already have your product ready for the masses. If not, the first step will be to find the right type of product to offer to your customers. That will mean establishing manufacturing or vendor relationships. Once you have the product ready, the real work starts. If you’re visiting my site, it means you’re likely ready for the next big jump – to enhance or create the ecommerce component of your business. As any store owner will tell you, managing an online store can be one of the more difficult and unexpectedly frustrating responsibilities you’ll encounter. Many clients look for the quick, cheap or easy solution. Often times they’ll attempt to launch a store on their own and then quickly realize there is so much more beyond just adding products to a website in order to effectively sell online.
It all starts with the platform you decide to use to both showcase your products and attract your customers. Solutions range from the ultra-complex and expensive to one-stop solutions which seemingly offer everything you’ll need at an attractively low price. The reality of what you’ll end up needing will likely fall somewhere in the middle. As you’ll quickly find out when researching what ecommerce platform to select – there are a ton of options. You’ll hear names like Magento, Shopify, Aabaco, Big Commerce, Volusion, WordPress, My Web Store – the list could go on and on. You’ll find many articles on the pro’s and con’s of each. And that’s exactly it – any platform CAN work. Success really comes down to what you’re willing to put into it and how attractive your products are to your intended audience. However – the platform you choose can make things easier or more difficult.
Over the years we’ve worked with many platforms, some extensively and some less so. We’ve worked on the retail side, taking orders, managing products and content and providing customer service. W’ve been “in the trenches”. Of course we have been on the development side as well, creating sites and teaching others how to maintain their own stores. At this time there a few platforms that we believe are best suited for the average ecommerce client. Those platforms would be Aabaco Small Business, Magento and Shopify. Each platform has it’s own pro’s and con’s and dependent on what a client is wanting, they can all provide a great solution.
“Out of the box” solutions which provide “one-click” set up can be great, platforms like Aabaco or Shopify. They allow you to relatively quickly get your products online, easily add payment providers, set up shipping and a host of other critical operations which will be required in order to sell online. However, solutions which provide everything you need within a click can also be confining. If you have more complex products or more complex solutions you want to offer, you may need a platform which will give you the flexibility to create a site without restrictions and limitations, something like Magento. It really does depend on what you’re after.
Which platform can be the one to work for you? Again, that depends on your product, your budget, the level of customization you’re looking for, your familiarity with online sales, etc. Rather than giving clients a set answer, we believe it’s important to have an in-depth discussion as to what you want and what can work best for you. The good news – there is a platform out there that will be suited to your needs. The challenge is finding it. Let’s start a conversation and discuss what it is you’re looking for and how to take your vision and make it a reality.
